Readers First: Towards Greater Ebook Adoption

December 04, 2014

The global publishing industry may have a diverse composition, but publishers, distributors, publishing service providers, and other industry players will agree on one thing: the whole industry thrives on getting books into the hands of readers. Otherwise, what’s the point of making books?

With the rise of digital publishing, one group has decided to take steps to make ebooks in particular more accessible to readers. The New York Public Library and other partner libraries have taken steps to improve readers’ access to ebooks in libraries. Through a project dubbed Readers First, they are working with the National Information Standards Organization and the Readium Foundation to establish standards that enable better interoperability and integration, and so provide readers with a simpler way to find, borrow, and read ebooks. This endeavor may broaden the reader base for ebooks and so indirectly support the digital publishing industry.

Message about Selfless Love Touches People, Turns into Blog‑to‑Book Deal

October 24, 2014

Blog-to-book deals are seldom, and not all are a success. Here's one that is.

Seth Adam Smith posted his dad's advice on marriage on his blog one Friday in November 2013. To his and his wife's shock, the post, “Marriage Isn't for You,” had reached eight million views by Sunday evening.

Obviously, the message that love is not about yourself but about making the other person happy touched a chord in a lot of people. After reaching 30 million views, various news stations, other websites, and publishers started reaching out to Smith. In January 2014, he signed a deal with Shadow Mountain Press, which released Marriage Isn't for You in book form in May 2014.

Smith has since then released another book, Your Life Isn't for You (published by Berrett-Koehler). He is currently working on his third book.

Frankfurt Book Fair 2014 Tackles the Rise of Self-Publishing

October 20, 2014

In recent years, self-publishing has become a viable alternative to waiting for a publisher to notice one's manuscript out of a mountain of manuscripts being evaluated. With several self-publishing platforms available, such as those offered by Amazon and Apple, aspiring writers can now put out a book at minimal cost and get all or the lion's share of any royalties.

The recently concluded Frankfurt Book Fair 2014 devoted a day to discussing self-publishing, including the trends and impact on the publishing industry. Initially embraced by writers unable to land a contract from publishers, self-publishing is now an option even for traditionally published writers, who may release some works through a publisher and some on their own. But self-publishing not only competes with publishing houses; it aids them as well, by becoming a source of new writing talent and market research data.

The fact is that readers purchase both self-published and traditionally published books. This shows the industry what readers want to read and are willing to pay to read. Self-publishing is expected to grow in importance and play a major role in shaping the future of the publishing industry.
